CEREC® One-Day Crowns Q & A

What is a dental crown?

A dental crown is a permanent cover or cap that surrounds your tooth. Made from a variety of materials — including all-metal, ceramic-on-metal, or all-ceramic — a crown’s location determines the best option for use.

Ceramic-on-metal offers a natural look with durability, but highly visible areas appear most natural when all-ceramic.

Crowns have several uses, including:

  • Repairing damage or decay
  • Adding protection to a damaged tooth
  • Improving appearance, alignment, or shape
  • Covering a dental implant

Dental crowns are also used to attach dental bridges.

What is a dental bridge?

Dental bridges are used to replace one or several missing teeth. This common method uses surrounding teeth or implants to support the bridge structure holding your replacement teeth, or pontics.

There are several types of dental bridges, including:

  • Traditional: held in place by crowns
  • Cantilever: supported on one side, not two
  • Maryland: held in place by a framework instead of crowns
  • Implant-supported: bridge supported by implants

Bridges can be ceramic, porcelain, or metal; the best option depends on its location and tooth function.

What are the benefits of dental restoration?

Missing teeth not only impact your smile, but they can also lead to structural changes in your mouth as your teeth shift into open spaces. Additional benefits include:

  • Maintaining your face shape
  • Helping you properly chew food
  • Keeping your bite in place
  • Preserving your oral health

What can I expect during my appointment?

When most dentists tell you that you need a crown or dental bridge, you make multiple appointments. But at Upper East Side Dental, Dr. Harvey uses CEREC®, a technological innovation that enables complete tooth restoration in a single office visit.

During your appointment, Dr. Harvey applies a thin layer of powder to your tooth before taking a digital photo with a special camera. Using the advanced, state-of-the-art technology offered by CEREC, Dr. Harvey can create a 3D image designing your tooth’s restoration.

After your design is complete, Dr. Harvey uses CEREC’s computer-automated milling machine to make your custom-made, hand-painted ceramic prosthetic. When it’s finished, Dr. Harvey completes your restoration by bonding or cementing it into place.
